Dark under-eye circles : Causes, care, best creams and skincare

Prima regola: Know your skin!

Causes

The main causes of under-eye circles are:

  • Genetics: this is definitely the primary cause.
  • Skin aging: this factor leads to fine lines and rough texture, the famous crow's feet, which worsen the appearance of under-eye circles.
  • Underlying medical conditions: anemia, skin conditions like atopy or eczema, hormonal imbalances, and more.
  • Lifestyle factors: lack of sleep, stress, eye rubbing, smoking, or excessive unprotected sun exposure can cause under-eye circles or worsen them if you already have them.

Ingredients to Use

Choose microcirculation-boosting active ingredients such as flavonoids (found in substances like Chrysin, arnica, and Centella Asiatica), caffeine, escin, and peptides (Palmitoyl Tetrapeptide-3, Palmitoyl Tetrapeptide-7).

In addition to these, opt for hydrating ingredients that plump the skin, eliminating fine lines and rough texture that make you look even more tired: hyaluronic acid, niacinamide, panthenol, and allantoin.

For the same reason, choose anti-aging ingredients such as peptides (Palmitoyl Tripeptide-5, Palmitoyl Tripeptide-38) and antioxidants, which reduce melanin levels, like Vitamin E, Vitamin C, niacinamide, and retinol.

Useful Tips

Choose a formula tailored to your needs that’s specially made for the eye contour. Avoid behaviors that worsen the appearance of your under-eye circles: improve your sleep quality, quit smoking, don’t rub your eyes too much, and wear SPF!

Don’t be afraid to use other cosmetic allies too, like color corrector: for purple/blue under-eye circles, use a yellow corrector; for light blue circles, use a peach/apricot color corrector; while for red-toned circles, the right shade is green.

How to Prevent Under-Eye Circles

Remember, everyone is different: there are many underlying causes of under-eye circles, and they can occur together.

Don’t forget that this is also a matter of expectations: since this is mostly a genetic concern, a dermocosmetic routine will help improve the appearance of under-eye circles and your overall complexion, but eliminating them entirely will require medical treatment and cosmetic surgery (and, unfortunately, these do not always provide permanent results).
