Enlarged Pores on Nose and Face? Here Are the Remedies and Products to Get Rid of Them

Enlarged pores: what are they? How to treat them? Here is my guide to delve deeper into this topic!

What are enlarged pores

The enlarged poresThey are a widespread skin imperfection.

Basically, pores are not invisible—everyone has them, and they are essential for skin perspiration. They are made up of the hair follicle and sebaceous gland. When the sebaceous gland releases sebum, it rises to the surface and collects in the pore.

Although enlarged pores are not a medical concern, they can be a source of aesthetic worry for many people.

Causes of Enlarged Pores on the Nose and Face: Why Are They So Visible?

Pores can become more visible to the naked eye for the following reasons:

  • Sebaceous hypersecretion: when the sebaceous glands produce an excessive amount of sebum;
  • Reduced elasticity around pores: when Skin becomes less elastic, pores may appear enlarged;
  • Increased hair follicle volume: when the pore at the end of the hair follicle becomes clogged.

When sebum accumulates in the pore and combines with dirt or makeup (remember to always remove your makeup!), the pore can become clogged and increase in size. As a result, if the pore remains clogged, a whitehead may develop.

Remedies and Products for Treating Enlarged Pores

Unfortunately, it is not possible to completely eliminate enlarged pores. As we saw earlier, pores are an essential structure for our skin.

That said, with suitable, correctly performed, and consistent treatments, we can refine them to make them less visible.

The recommended treatments are as follows:

  • Cleanser: opt for cleansers formulated with gentle surfactants, oil-free, foaming formulas, such as gel or mousse cleansers. Developing the good habit of washing your face both morning and evening is essential for keeping skin clean and free of excess impurities;
  • Exfoliant: prefer chemical exfoliants (formulated with acids) over physical exfoliants (formulated with abrasive microgranules). For enlarged pores, facial exfoliants formulated with salicylic acid have been shown to be effective. Why salicylic acid specifically? Because it is the most sebum-compatible acid, so it penetrates pores more deeply and delivers a greater purifying effect. To avoid this type of treatment being a bit too harsh, I recommend exfoliating only in the evening, starting with every other day at first, then gradually increasing the frequency;
  • Face Cream: choose a face cream with a lightweight texture, fast-absorbing, and low oil content. Ideally formulated with astringent and sebum-regulating active ingredients;
  • Face Mask: apply 2 times a week a face mask purifying clay-based face mask to remove excess sebum, prevent the appearance of enlarged pores, and help reduce their size.

Enlarged Pores and Steam: Let's Debunk the Myth

How many times have you heard that steam opens pores and cold water closes them? Well, don't believe that anymore!

Don't mistake your pores for a door—you don't open them with hot water or close them with cold water! Their size does not depend on temperature; it remains unchanged.

Right now you might be wondering: 'Why during facial cleansing does the face come into contact with steam?'

Because this way, sebum is liquefied, making it easier to extract impurities!

Enlarged Pores and Blackheads: What to Do to Solve the Problem?

As we discussed just above, enlarged pores create space for whiteheads to form — small white bumps that develop on the surface of the Skin when hair follicles become clogged with keratin, sebum, and bacteria. These can lead to other cosmetic concerns, namely blackheads: when the openings left by whiteheads and enlarged pores fill with sebum and impurities, small dark-tipped cylinders form inside them, clearly visible to the naked eye. Since enlarged pores and blackheads these are Skin concerns that cause aesthetic distress for those affected by them, it is important to have a skincare routine that addresses them. As we covered in previous sections, there are many products that can be used to reduce the appearance of enlarged pores. If blackheads are also present, the recommended cosmetic solution is to use exfoliating products or with sebum-regulating action (such as the Purifying Face Cream SKIN FIRST), to help normalize sebum production and cleanse the skin of impurities.

When Is It Necessary to Use Laser Treatment for Enlarged Pores?

Fortunately, enlarged pores are not a dangerous health condition; in fact, they are a completely natural, physiological occurrence, especially as you age and the Skin loses elasticity. For many, this is a minor issue, but for others, it is an aesthetic concern that undermines self-esteem and well-being, so it is often addressed and corrected. The most effective method to resolve this issue is laser treatment for enlarged pores: this type of procedure falls under the umbrella of aesthetic surgery, while being less invasive than other treatments. This technology, which uses a laser to shrink pores, as well as reduce wrinkles and Skin spots, owes its effectiveness to its ability to penetrate beyond the surface to reach the deepest layers of the Skin. This method is chosen by many for its fast problem resolution timelines: while other methods require long periods of time, laser treatment for enlarged pores only needs 5 or 6 sessions to deliver initial results.

Is Dermabrasion Recommended for Enlarged Pores?

Dermabrasion is an aesthetic medicine technique used in dermatology that involves the controlled removal of the superficial layers of the facial Skin to correct related cosmetic concerns, including wrinkles, skin spots, scars, and, as noted, enlarged pores. Since this is a fairly invasive aesthetic treatment that requires local anesthesia, or even general anesthesia if performed on large areas of the Skin, dermabrasion is typically only considered for severe cosmetic concerns, and always after a thorough consultation with your specialist doctor.
