Pimples on the back : Causes, care, best creams and skincare

Con il termine backne intendiamo proprio i brufoli che si sviluppano sulla schiena. Succede quando sudore, sebo, cellule morte della pelle e batteri rimangono intrappolati nei pori della pelle. Possono presentarsi come:

- punti neri: noti anche come comedoni aperti, sono un’occlusione che si sviluppa nell’apertura dei follicoli piliferi quando sebo, cheratina e batteri si accumulano e si ossidano, assumendo una colorazione marrone o nera;

- punti bianchi: noti anche come comedoni chiusi, sono una lesione dell’acne non infiammatoria che si forma quando il sebo e le cellule della pelle bloccano l’apertura del follicolo pilifero;

- papule: si manifestano quando il batterio C. acnes colonizza i comedoni chiusi e li infiamma; le cisti sono una forma più grave che può essere anche dolorosa. Entrambe queste categorie identificano l’acne di tipo infiammatorio;

- follicolite: si tratta di un’infiammazione dei follicoli piliferi, in forma lieve o profonda, che da origine a delle pustole; può essere di tipo infettivo o non infettivo.

Sweat, pregnancy or infections: all the causes

Some factors that can contribute to the development of back acne. Here they are:

  • friction and trapped sweat: T-shirts, backpacks, sports equipment and other clothing that rub against sweaty skin.
  • hormones: pregnant women are more likely to develop it.
  • genetics and gender: males are more likely to have it, especially if they have a genetic predisposition
  • bacterial infections: such as those caused by Staphylococcus aureus (e.g. folliculitis);
  • sun exposure (you already know the advice we will give you in this case).
  • diet: sugars, alcohol and foods high in fat
  • hygiene: an aspect not to be underestimated, which concerns not only the body but also the hair, especially if it is long and rests on the shoulders and back.

How to get rid of back pimples: remedies and treatments

  • Always apply sunscreen, choosing specific products with a lightweight texture.
  • Do not touch your pimples! This creates opportunities for infection, open wounds, scabs and scars. Not to mention the fact that it greatly prolongs healing time.
  • Keep your skin clean, especially after exercising or sweating
  • Use specific cleansers and body creams that contain purifying active ingredients, able to regulate sebum production and prevent impurities from forming.

Products to use for a deep cleansing of the back

From a cosmetic point of view, what you can do to treat back acne is exfoliate with both physical exfoliants (such as scrubs) and chemical ones (salicylic acid first and foremost).

You may also find cleansers containing exfoliants useful. Then use moisturizers that are very lightweight and contain purifying active ingredients, which protect the skin from friction without weighing it down further.

At Skin First, we have dedicated products, such as the back acne cream or the shower cleanser, which you can also conveniently buy in a kit for a deep cleanse of the whole body.

How to prevent backne and what to absolutely avoid

What you can do to prevent pimples and impurities from forming on the back:

  • Wash sheets, towels, pillowcases and clothes regularly, especially tight-fitting ones such as bras or sportswear;
  • Avoid wearing items that rub against your back, such as backpacks;
  • Wear loose clothing made from natural fibers, such as cotton;
  • Shower and change clothes immediately after exercising or sweating;
  • Try to keep your hair properly clean, a factor often overlooked, especially if you have long strands and pimples covering your shoulders and back.

When to see a dermatologist

If it seems that the situation is not improving or is getting out of your control, don't wait and ask a doctor for advice.

Backne, like acne on the face, can in fact be treated both topically and systemically (with oral medications): a combined treatment that targets more than one of the mechanisms involved in the pathogenesis of acne and is often successful.
